Niou was an ordinary kid growing up - maybe a bit lethargic.. but the fact that he slept like the dead (almost literally) was considered a blessing by his family. He didn't snore and that's about all that mattered. At age 16, daydreaming in class, he discovered he could enter this semi-hibernative state at will and still retain a degree of consciousness. But it wasn't really useful (apart from sleeping soundly through class) and nothing much changed..
Until his surprise 18th birthday party.
As the lights flared on and the shout went up, Niou stumbled back through the door in surprise. Literally.. through the door.
The next day, he found himself at Ryuhana Gakuen. His family moved away without leaving a forwarding address. Cue the beginning of the end. Or something like that.

INITIALLY: during sleep his body temperature, breathing, metabolism and heart-rate all lowered to resemble a state of hibernation. Even when awake, his stats are generally lower than normal. At 16 years old, the discovery that he can enter this state at will and remain conscious enough to be vaguely aware of his surroundings. At age 18, the discovery of his ability to phase through solid objects at a molecular level by becoming intangible (see the initial powers of Marvel's Shadowcat).
CURRENTLY: body temp, heart-rate, etc. permanently lower than average by a significant margin - moreso when asleep; it is difficult to phase at will (it's easier to make only a hand or leg intangible); he usually only does a full phase by accident/as a result of shock.
EVENTUALLY: he will learn to also phase through other objects/people that he is in direct contact with (up to a certain mass), and learn to use his trance ability to allow for longer travel.
- Niou remains completely visible while phasing - it's impossible to tell which parts of him are intangible at any given time.
- He can only phase as long and far as he can old his breath, and only travels as fast as the speed at which he enters the solid matter for its duration.
- There are two levels of sleep: trance mode, and hibernation proper.
- Phasing at will brings on slight dizziness. While passing through something, it usually feels a bit like feathers under the skin. But not.. always. ^^' How his phases react in combination with other mutant powers is yet unknown.
